Like most Canadians who caught Covid and recovered from it, I don’t give the illness much thought anymore—a bad cough, no energy, feeling bad for a week. All in the past.
But then I became friends with Arnold, who has Long Covid.
Arnold’s case is so severe that he had to leave the job he loved and go on long term disability due to extreme fatigue, brain fog, memory and concentration issues and pain. Any exertion, mental or physical, can incapacitate him for hours or even days.
(In 2025 I wrote about how Arnold is dealing with the condition from a perspective of Christian faith.)
Thanks to Arnold, I was introduced me to the COVID Long-Haulers Support Group Canada on Facebook. I can’t solve Long Covid, but as a journalist (and human being) I felt the least I could do was pay attention to what people are struggling with.
After listening in for a few weeks, I suggested to my editor at Canadian Affairs that this topic of Long Covid deserved a long feature article—which is what my colleague Meagan Gilmore did a great job of researching and writing. I was published last week.
